INDUCING SCENT INTO PACKAGING

Every product has its odor, sometimes it’s mild & refreshing like bakery products, sometimes it is strong & pungent like Phenyl. The very essence of relating a product because of its odor has now built-in us over a period of years. Every time a pizza delivery person enters the lift and the smell of freshly baked pizza comes out from the packaging makes you crave to order one for yourself.

While Western drivers like the 'new car' smell fresh off the production line, Chinese would rather prefer their cars didn't smell of anything - a cultural divide that's testing car makers seeking an edge to revive sales in the world's biggest auto market.

At Ford, for example, 18 smell assessors - dubbed "golden noses" - at its research plant outside the eastern city of Nanjing to test the smell of each material that goes inside a Ford car to be sold in China and around Asia.

Developing a personalized smell

Choosing the right scent impacts your product’s long-term viability.

I got the opportunity to attend the workshop of #Tracy Pepe in #DubaiDesignWeek

Generally, there is a wrong perception that perfumers develop scents to counter other scent, instead they develop it to neutralize the scent.

The oils developed are based on color therapy. Every color denotes certain emotions.

I am trying to make a scent that helps me cheer mood and have a surprise element. I have used brown for natural, orange for happiness, and pink for a surprise element.

Different ways of inducing scents in packaging

It is very important to create an experience that registers for a longer time and scent is one of them. It engages the sensory organs and helps us connect better with products. Inducing scent in the packaging creates shelf differentiation and helps the leading market.

A. Natural vents in packaging

Let the natural product odour pass through vents to attract consumers. Especially for fresh baked goods or eatables.

B. Scented paper

Essentials oils can be infused with paper to provide desired results for 2-3 months shelf life.

C. Scented polymers

Scented plastics provide new avenues for marketing exploration as branding continues to evolve beyond logos and graphics.

D. Scented Fillers

Fillers are used in the packaging to add natural, eco-friendly scent. This will provide a nice experience plus add to a surprise element of packaging. These can be especially used with cosmetic product packaging.

E. Sniff Seal

Sniff Seal technology allows the aroma to come out while sealing the packaging entierly.

E-commerce is a rising platform where unboxing experience is very much required. Inducing scent in packaging can help in creating a very good unboxing experience and also add a surprise element. It enhances brand engagement with consumers and is cost-effective.

Keep your nose on alert for the next packaging you see or you want to develop :)
